Summer!

I hope you are all having a great summer!

With great excitement I would like to inform you all that I accepted a position as an Art Teacher at Brunswick High School for the Fall of 2012! In the near days there will be assignments and calendars added pertaining to the new classes I will be teaching. If you are looking for Graphic Design and Web Design resources they are still available in the archives of the blog, as well as in the side bar links. 

For those of you still following the blog, there has been some great updates! In the left sidebar you will find some college, scholarship, and internship links. I hope you will find these helpful! I have included a variety of options in the art field as well as great opportunities in our greater Cleveland area.

Friday, May 27th there will be a multiple choice and short answer quiz on BubbleScore over the Adobe Illustrator Program. We will begin preparing for an application test in Illustrator, the test will be given at the end of the "Cook & Draw" project.

1st: Use file in Read Drive "example for live trace". Open using Photoshop and follow directions above.
2nd: Open the file in the Read Drive called "Student Sketches" and find yours. Repeat the above directions!

So far in Adobe Illustrator we have labeled the tools in our workspace, created tutorials, and practiced some skill in follow along class sessions. Below is a running list of the skills you need to know how to demonstrate in illustrator along with the vocabulary to describe them.

Skills from Tutorial #1
1. Know what a vector image is...
2. What is rasterizing?
3. Know how and when to use the (white) direct selection arrow, and the (black) selection arrow.
4. Know how to "create outlines" on text

5. Know how to change the color of both fill and stroke independently.
6. Understand how to change the type/texture of a line or stroke using a variety of brushes
7. Be able to identify translucent and opaque strokes.
8. Be able to create a gradient using the gradient tool
9. Be able to "Blend" to create a 3D object.
10. Know where the 3D Effects tool is and what it is most compatible with.

1.  Creating an InDesign document with multiple pages
2. Ability to create multiple columns on all pages.
3. Drag and drop rules along with using guidelines and side rulers along with x and y axis to measure/locate text boxes.
4. Be able to create color swatches using specific cmyk values.
5. Know how to save and create character styles with fonts using a specific font, size, and color.
6. Know how to insert Placeholder Text.
7. Know how to snap to grid and align items.
8. Know how to alter transparency of  both text and text box, but also know how to independently alter each.
9. Know how to add a variety of effects.
10. Know how to change workspace settings.
11. Be able to create a variety of layers.

14. Know the different ways to insert photos and alter fittings in relation to frames.

¤Photography that has been edited for composition and to fit color scheme.

Composition + Color Theory Assignments

Week of February 20th:
Directions for Color Theory & Composition Assignments

Assignment 1: Photoshop Review + Color Theory (15 points)


Find ONE photo.                                   
Edit* it in Photoshop TWO ways to show the following:
1.      A COOL color scheme (5 points)
2.      A WARM color scheme (5 points)
3.      Describe EACH of the above photos using descriptive terms. (5 points total)
4.      Make sure your first and last name is on the document, and USE SPELL CHECK.
*Hint: use color channels, levels, saturation, and multiple layers to edit.

Assignment 2: Cropping Review + Composition Application (15 points)


First review the following resource:
Second Analyze:
1.      Choose Three (3) Photos and paste original in Photoshop
2.      Crop all Three (3) photos to be more visually pleasing. Show photo next to the original
3.      Use composition rules & strategies from class notes and above website. Under each edited photo describe what strategy was used to strengthen the composition.
4.      Make sure your first and last name are on the document, and USE SPELL CHECK.


Assignment 3: Analysis of Graphic Design using Color & Composition                 (15 points)

For assignment three you will find flyers, posters or magazine covers/spreads/advertisement or websites that uses one of the following:
Create a PowerPoint. Cut and paste each of the items into PowerPoint into the correctly labeled slide
Slide #’s and labels:
1.       Composition & Color Theory by name, date, class
2.      Rule of thirds
3.      Up-Close focus
4.      Emphasis and Minority
5.      Symmetrical Balance
6.      Asymmetrical Balance
7.      Monochromatic Color Scheme
8.      Warm Color Scheme
9.      Cool Color Scheme
10.  Complimentary Color Scheme
11.  Triadic Color Scheme
12.  Analogous Color Scheme
13.  Write a paragraph describing which your favorite composition is and why. Support using composition and color terminology. Discuss what the message the image sends and how.
